IF Eastern Cape tourism is a rough gem, then the provincial tourism summit held in Port Elizabeth over the past two days aimed to polish it.

The summit, on “The Eastern Cape is discovering tourism as the mainstream of economy now and beyond 2010”, ended yesterday with strong statements of intent and a clear outline of what is needed for success.

The summit agreement, signed by government, labour, business, the house of traditional leaders and civil society, says a report on the proceedings should be completed by the end of October and a costed tourism action plan drawn up within 90 days.
